As Senior Science Writer in the Office of Communications at the University of Arizona, my job is to showcase the impact of scientific research done by our researchers, be they faculty members, postdocs, students or collaborators. Due to our university’s leadership in the space sciences and astronomy, the majority of my stories and press releases fall into those domains, but at heart, and by virtue of my training, I consider myself more at home in the biological and ecological sciences. My particular passion lies within marine ecology, particularly the Gulf of California, where I have spent many years exploring, both above and underwater.

As a mentor for N-Gen, I would like to be able to share my experience acquired over the past 20 years as a professional science writer and public information officer with researchers and help them better navigate the world of media relations, news, social media campaigns, public opinion and even crisis communication. I particularly emphasize effective communication strategies, tactics and tools, as well as the importance of defining various target audiences and how to engage with them in the most effective way.
