About | I am a naturalist/artist. I am broadly interested in biological diversity, particularly diversity of form and behavior. I place a strong emphasis on direct observation and work in the field as much as I can. At the moment, I am working on a series of paintings that examine the diversity of form within saguaros. Each piece is based upon an individual plant i have located, sketched, and photographed. Each painting also represents a solution to a visual problem involving color, composition, perspective and light that I set for myself. Past works have considered other broadly Sonoran subjects: coral bean flowers, Wupatki ruins, elephant trees, Quitobaquito pupfish, Anna’s hummingbird & hackberry, yucca flowers, a pacific sea horse skeleton and a black murex shell, ironwood flowers, etc.I have a BFA from RI School of Design, a BS in Biology from U Massachusetts, and a PhD (Zoology) from ASU. I teach introductory Biology at Pima Community College. |
