Call for New Board Members

If N-Gen speaks to you, please consider taking a leadership role!

The Next Generation Sonoran Desert Researchers (N-Gen) represents a multinational and cross-border effort to shape and support a community dedicated to various aspects of science and conservation of the greater Sonoran Desert. In this context, since its foundation in 2012, N-Gen has been an ideal platform for academic training, scientific research with conservation impacts, knowledge exchange, environmental education, communication, and the dissemination of sciences, arts, and humanities.

N-Gen is currently looking for new board members to help envision and execute the next era of the organization. We are actively looking for new voices and perspectives to find the best path forward for N-Gen to achieve its vision.

The N-Gen board consists of ca. 10–15 individuals who coordinate network activities to address the research and conservation challenges of our time within this multinational region.

Board members will contribute energy and focus on re-envisioning our goals for the region and breathing new life into our efforts. We are asking for a serious time commitment (~10 hours a month) with quarterly meetings and one in person board retreat per year (usually in the Summer or late Fall, for 2024 the middle of August).

If you are interested, please submit a brief proposal including:
     (1) An overview of your motivation, vision and personal interests to join the N-Gen board (maximum 1 page)
     (2) a Curriculum Vitae.

Feel free to talk to any current board member (https://nextgensd.com/about-us/board-of-directors/) with any questions.

Applications should be sent to the N-Gen e-mail address: nextgensd2012@gmail.com no later than Friday May 31st, 2024.

Additional N-Gen Board Information

All activities by board members are voluntary and members are serving as individuals and do not speak nor serve for their institution, guild (or profession), or community.

Our Vision
The Next Generation Sonoran Desert Researchers is a network of individuals committed to the rich social and ecological landscape that spans the mainland Sonoran Desert, the Baja California Peninsula, the Gulf of California, and the US-Mexico borderlands. This interdisciplinary network addresses the research and conservation challenges of our time within this multinational region. Dedicated to the spirit of the Sonoran Desert, N-Gen (1) catalyzes research and biocultural collaboration, (2) develops capacity for innovative transdisciplinary action, and (3) influences decision makers in both countries to promote a conservation ethic that matches the grandeur of the landscape.

Structure

N-Gen is a nimble and minimally administrative entity, supported by a director and an active working board of diverse skill sets. N-Gen is not a registered 501c3. The International Community Foundation (ICF) serves as N-Gen’s fiscal sponsor.

New Perspectives

We are currently looking for people to join the N-Gen working board who are fully committed to generate a positive impact in the Sonoran Desert region. We are especially looking for voices that represent the next generation. It is important that interested individuals have the time to dedicate to creating change. We strive for the board members to reflect a balance of the multinational nature of the network ―including the different regions of the Sonoran Desert ― and a broad range of social, natural, and artistic disciplines.

Anyone interested can apply to be considered an N-Gen board member, and all the proposals will be received and evaluated equally. With the goal of maintaining the representation of perspectives in our community, we are particularly looking for candidates with the following profiles:

  • Artists that cross the line into science and social topics
  • Members of Indigenous cultures
  • Basic or applied social scientists
  • Land managers
  • Members of civil organizations (NGOs)
  • Researchers focused on marine systems
  • Researchers with interest and experience in science communication
  • Individuals with experience in governance, legislation, and political science of the region
  • All other areas of focus more than welcome!
