Does N-Gen allow overhead or indirect/administrative costs?

N-Gen does not allow any amount of overhead or indirect/administrative costs for either Student Research or Collaborative Grants.

How does the reimbursement process work?

Student and Early Career Research Grants: 100% of the funds for student grants will be provided to the selected grantees at the beginning of the project period. Submission and verification of expenses are required to account for the entire granted amount from the project leader with the submission of the final report.

Collaborative Research Grants: 50% of the funds for collaborative grants will be provided to the selected grantees at the beginning of the project period. The remaining 50% will be allocated upon accounting for the first payment via the submission and verification of expenses by the project leader at agreed upon dates. In addition, full accounting of all expenses are required from the project leader with the submission of the final report.

Do I need to be an N-Gen member to apply?

Yes. To join the network, add your information to this form. N-Gen membership is free.

Do applicants need to be affiliated to an academic institution in the U.S. or Mexico?

No, academic affiliations are not necessary for either student or collaborative grants. We welcome proposals from applicants worldwide, including freelancers and independent researchers or artists.

Do collaborative project require participants in Mexico and the U.S.?

No, we welcome proposals from applicants worldwide, and from international teams and teams in a single country.

What language should the proposal be in?

Proposals can be in English or Spanish.

Can I submit the same proposal in both categories?

The same proposal cannot be submitted in both categories. However, researchers may submit more than one original research proposal in either categorie (i.e. one early career proposal and another collaborative proposal).

Do applications need to be in the natural sciences?

No. We welcome submissions that incorporate multinational research, the fusion of art and science, or scientific journalism, as well as traditional academic perspectives, and topics ranging from sociology, conservation, natural and biological sciences, border issues, anthropology, to arts and humanities, that align with the vision and goals of the N-Gen community. Preference will be given to projects that transcend the boundaries of a single discipline.

Are grants available for adjacent areas (Northern Baja California, Chihuahuan Desert, etc.)?

We use a broad definition of the Sonoran Desert that includes all of the Baja California peninsula, and applications from adjacent areas such as the Chihuahuan Desert may be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Are there grants available for marine topics?

Yes. The RFP includes associated marine and coastal areas such as the Gulf of California and the Pacific Ocean.

How many team members are necessary to apply for a collaborative grant?

Collaborative grants require a minimum of two people.

Are bibliographic references included in the one page limit?

The page limit does not include references, which can be annexed. Also, there is no predefined bibliographic format.
