About

My research interests span marine conservation and environmental management. I study human impacts to the marine world; specifically, anthropogenic impacts on seagrass health. I found that land use was a more important predictor of tropical seagrass bed health than marine protection. In Northern Baja Mexico where rainfall events are rare and episodic, land use has undocumented impacts on Zostera marina and Phyllospadix sp. beds. The increases in agriculture, industrial uses and housing developments along the arid and semi-arid coast could potentially impact eelgrass and surf grass, which provide important ecosystem services such as juvenile nurseries, carbon sequestration, sediment retention and water quality improvement.
