About

I am a science writer based in Mexico City. I graduated from Principia College in 1999 with a degree in biology. After working on a number of research projects dealing with dolphin intelligence and coastal ecology, I became, in turns, an environmental educator and an environmental consultant. But it wasn’t until enrolling in UC Santa Cruz’s science communication program that I discovered my passion of journalism. I learned that only through compelling characters can stories touch us and inspire action. As such, I have molded my career around science-based profiles of inspiring, dedicated, or controversial figures in society. My work has appeared in The Chronicle of Higher Education, Nature, The New York Times, The Utne Reader, Discover Magazine, The Christian Science Monitor and am currently under contract with National Geographic.
