The N-Gen Field Grants program provides financial support to student, Indigenous, early-career, and collaborative research in the Sonoran Desert, linking scientific knowledge with local action through partnership with the Northwest Mexico Union of Field Stations (UNEC).

UNEC is a collaborative network of organizations managing field stations with a shared mission: to promote ecosystem and biodiversity conservation through scientific research, community engagement, and the development of transdisciplinary research networks.

In Spring 2025 we launched the N-Gen Field Grants program in partnership with UNEC.

Previously, between 2017 and 2019, N-Gen supported 9 Collaborative and 14 Early Career Grants. See the overview of these projects here

Grants awards have been $5,000 USD for collaborative and $1,500 USD for Early Career Grants.

For the 2025 call, projects were required to fit the following profile:

  • All projects must be undertaken at or in collaboration with at least one UNEC Field Station (see map of UNEC Field Stations).
  • A letter of support from collaborating field station(s) required as part of the pre-proposal application.
  • All applicants must be N-Gen members.
  • Projects should be designed for a one-year period, with a start date of September 1, 2025, and an end date of August 31, 2026.
  • No restriction on applicant affiliation.
  • No predefined areas of geographic or thematic focus as long as the proposal is anchored at a UNEC Field Station.
  • There will be a pre-proposal phase, with select applications invited to submit a full proposal.
  • Full proposals contain a more thorough work plan in collaboration with the field station(s) they will be working at. Applicants are also asked to address any reviewer questions and provide additional project and budget information.
  • An individual was able apply to either the Student, Indigenous, and Early Career Research Grants as an individual OR the Collaborative Research Grants as part of a team. However, a person can only submit one application.
  • Selected applicants interact with the UNEC Field Stations as independent researchers.
  • Proposals reviewed by a N-Gen leadership committee. Final decisions were communicated in August 2025.
