Dear N-Gen \/ Estimado N-Gen,<\/h1>\n
At over 350 members and coming off our second remarkable Summit, N-Gen is stronger than ever! Just four years ago we were asking ourselves if a community of Sonoran Desert researchers really existed. Having that question resoundingly answered YES! we shifted to figuring out the best way to capitalize on the potential of a united network. Our actions to date, led by a dedicated volunteer board, have been the first attempts to realize that potential. It is just the beginning. A multitude of critical issues and exciting opportunities were brought up and discussed in Guaymas at the 2015 Summit. The next phase of N-Gen will be focused on creating a variety of platforms that address these issues and seize the opportunities before us. Just as the title of the Journal of the Southwest N-Gen special issue \u201cSeeds in the Sand\u201d, our actions today are the seeds that will grow and evolve, that will wind their way across the border and weave together our disciplines towards transformative solutions. \nCon m\u00e1s de 350 miembros y habiendo vivido nuestra extraordinaria segunda Cumbre,  \u00a1N-Gen es m\u00e1s fuerte que nunca! Hace apenas cuatro a\u00f1os nos pregunt\u00e1bamos si realmente exist\u00eda  una comunidad de investigadores del Desierto Sonorense. Ya hemos  respondido a esa pregunta  rotundamente\u2026\u00a1S\u00cd existe!, ahora nos estamos concentrado en definir la mejor forma de aprovechar el potencial de una red unida. Nuestras acciones hasta la fecha, dirigidas por un consejo voluntario dedicado, han sido los primeros intentos para hacer realidad ese potencial. Esto s\u00f3lo es el comienzo. En la Cumbre de Guaymas 2015, se identificaron y discutieron una multitud de temas cr\u00edticos y oportunidades importantes. La siguiente fase de la N-Gen se centrar\u00e1 en la creaci\u00f3n de una variedad de plataformas que aborden estos temas y se aprovechen las oportunidades que tenemos frente a nosotros. Al igual que el t\u00edtulo de la revista de la edici\u00f3n especial de N-Gen  en el Journal of the Southwest  \u00abSemillas en la arena\u00bb, nuestras acciones de hoy son las semillas que crecer\u00e1n y evolucionar\u00e1n, que forjaran su camino a trav\u00e9s de la frontera y entretejer\u00e1n nuestras disciplinas hacia soluciones transformadoras. 2015 Summit<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n
The 2015 Summit is behind us and it was a great success! We had 170 participants, 60 from the U.S., 82 from Mexico, and 28 indigenous participants. There were many themes and priority issues that emerged from the nearly 30 sessions that were convened. Please visit the Summit website<\/a><\/span> for summaries of the sessions as well as a full participant list and information on each of the career recognition award honorees. This was a remarkable event. We hope that the connections established over these three fall days in Guaymas will empower us for the years to come.<\/span><\/div>\n

Searching for New Board Members<\/strong><\/h4>\n

During the Summit we announced the availability of 3 spaces on the N-Gen board. We are looking for interested and committed individuals to join in the direction of N-Gen. Learn more about the structure of N-Gen and the role of board members<\/a><\/span> or read about <\/a>current N-Gen action items<\/a><\/span>. We are especially looking for individuals that can help N-Gen with communication and better connect with the arts, NGOs, and other arenas outside of academia, in addition to research. All are welcome to apply.
\nTo be considered for a spot on the N-Gen board, please send us an email<\/a> <\/span>with (1) a couple of paragraphs describing how you would make an important contribution to the board and how you can help realize the N-Gen vision and (2) a current CV. Ecology and Conservation Course with the Comcaac<\/strong><\/h4>\n
Ben has just gotten back from the first part of a year long N-Gen effort focused on supporting Comcaac youth to be leaders of ecology and conservation projects. The intensive field-based course was a remarkable time of shared learning both in the class and outside. The course was joined by the esteemed researchers Enriqueta Velarde, Rodolfo Dirzo, Carolyn O\u2019Meara, Cathy Moser Marlett, and Laura Monti. You can get a sense of the activities at the course Facebook page<\/a><\/span>. Everyone is eager to keep the learning going this spring.<\/div>\n

Curso de Ecolog\u00eda y Conservaci\u00f3n con los Comcaac<\/strong><\/h4>\n
Ben acaba de regresar de la primera fase de un esfuerzo de todo un a\u00f1o de N-Gen enfocado a apoyar a los j\u00f3venes Comcaac a ser l\u00edderes en proyectos de ecolog\u00eda y conservaci\u00f3n.  El curso intensivo de campo fue un momento formidable de aprendizaje mutuo tanto en la clase como en el campo. 6&6 Update<\/strong><\/h4>\n

N-Gen’s initial art-science collaboration is in full swing. The artist-scientist pairs are set and the creative process is moving ahead. Make sure you check the 6&6 website for updates and the latest developments<\/a><\/span>. 2016 will be a year of creation, the products of which we hope to share in person at a gallery space to be determined in early 2017.<\/p>\n
