I am examining the mechanisms that regulate the impact of the exotic plant Pennisetum ciliare once it has been successfully established. I am using a combination of field experiments and demographic models to examine native plant persistence in the pastures. I am particularly interested in how the establishment of this grass changes the survival and permanence of native plants, the microclimate and the soil biogeochemistry. All of my work is being conducted on the Sonoran desert, a habitat with extensive areas converted to buffelgrass pastures.
