Parque Nacional Bahía de Loreto

Expedition report

Expedition report

As part of the activities of the New Generation of Sonoran Desert Researchers, we carried out a trans-disciplinary maritime and land expedition between May 8 and 11, 2023 aboard the Triplefin vessel.

The expedition aimed to bring together a diverse group of local actors to reflect on the state of the social and ecological system in the park and to recognize its main challenges. This scientific information on terrestrial and marine biodiversity could help make better decisions that guarantee the quality of life of the inhabitants of Loreto and the conservation of ecosystem services in the long term.

Activities

The expedition promoted interaction and dialogue to achieve consensus between different local actors from La Paz, Ensenada Blanca and Loreto, discussing the challenges facing the park.

  • Visit to the tourist area of Isla Coronado including a land tour.
  • Tour of the coast of Isla Carmen.

Parque Nacional Bahía de Loreto Preliminary Report Card

Based on this collaborative expedition, we identified the key elements for a Report Card for the park.

Report cards are brief informational tools to concisely evaluate and communicate the current health status of an ecosystem. They contrast and integrate data from various environmental, social and economic indicators in order to monitor positive or negative changes within an area of interest over time.
